Before opting it as your career you must know few things about fashion designing.

So what is fashion designing? Fashion designing is an art. It is the world's most idyllic field that deals with the intense glow, the passion of glamor, the fixation of style, the wonder of nature, and reasoning of adoration between heart and mind. Fashion is an instant language which helps to express a lot about a person.

A fashion designer is a person who, often through drawing and sketching, develops the ideas and concepts for new clothing trends. It is not only limited to clothing but also includes accessories, handbags, and footwear.

A fashion designer is responsible for developing a particular style for each garment — including the form, color, fabric, trimmings, and other elements of the garment as a whole. The fashion designer starts with a concept about how a dress will appear, transforms that concept into a design (such as a sketch) and determines how the design will be transformed into an actual piece of clothing.

Fashion designers should know about the demands of the fashion market. They need to be very interested in learning new things and reading magazines, journals and books of fashion design and new trends. They also need to be interested in artistic things, visit art galleries, and interact with artists of all kinds whenever they have the chance. A designer should also have some knowledge and tailoring experience (cutting, draping, sewing, etc.) and should be able to tell the difference between different levels of fabric quality. A good understanding of the audience's lifestyle and client/consumer desires, needs and requirements is also required in fashion design.

In order to pursue fashion designing, you have to love it with every fiber of your being.

  • Creative/artistic personality: Whether you're a fashion designer or want to make a difference in this field, innovation is your main weapon. When you glance at a piece of fabric, you should have enough creative ability to see what it's going to look like in a dress. What the content works and what style is ideally adapted to it. It's a core competency that allows you to deliver something significant from scratch.
  • Good sketching skills: When you create clothing, drawing skills are a must! Through painting them on screen, you need to make your thoughts come alive. There is always hope, however, if you are not the creative kind! As several artists have moved their projects to technology.
  • Keen eye for detail: Strong fashion designers ought not only to put their designs to practice, but also to dig into the specifics. Each piece of fabric, sewing, ruffle or pleat needs to be in the right position to offer custom designs. You will basically be able to collect the critical and detailed information that nobody else would note.
  • Ability to visualize: The stronger your imagination abilities, the more successful you can be at having your concepts come true. By learning and perfecting your design abilities, you should be able to visualize the final product when it is created and bring the concepts on paper in a manner that enables you to understand them.
  • Communication skills: You will interact easily by providing simple and succinct directions to explain your proposals and work with other designers, merchandisers and other members of the team. Without this critical skill, full programs will fail as every line is dependent on broad departmental communication.
  • Determination and hard work: It is a major one as you can work really long hours in the business, whether you are employed for some organization or you are employed by yourself. Determination and hard work is as key to success in all careers.
Having these sets of skills is important but the most important thing is the interest. If you don't have an adequate interest in this field, you can't be a fashion designer. Both aptitude and interest are important aspects that one should consider before choosing their career.
