Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 7 wickets for their 5th win in six matches in the 2019 Indian Premier League to reclaim the top spot in the points table.

Deepak Chahar destroyed the KKR top-order with 3 wickets in his first 3 overs while Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir took 2 wickets apiece for the Super Kings.

Chasing 109, Chennai Super Kings lost Shane Watson (17) and Suresh Raina (14) to Sunil Narine inside the first 5 overs. But KKR had too little on the board for their bowlers to mount a serious challenge for CSK in their fortress.

Andre Russell unbeaten 50 meant KKR finished with 108 for 9 after being reduced to 79 for 9. They were in danger of folding for their second lowest total in the IPL but Russells second half-century of the season helped the Knight Riders get into triple digits. The KKR openers had smashed Rajasthan Royals on Sunday and CSK were thrilled to see them off both early.

KKR still had plenty of batting left but Nitish Rana and Robin Uthappa fell to Deepak Chahar in his next 2 overs and they slipped to 24 for 4 off 4.4 overs.

KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik played some good looking shots but fell to Imran Tahir for a 21-ball 19.

Deepak Chahar was britlliant with the new ball. He trapped Chris Lynn lbw in the first over of the match before Harbhajan Singh dismissed Sunil Narine in the second over.

Shubman Gill failed to pick up a googly from Tahir and MS Dhoni completed the stumping. In 10.1 overs, KKR were 47 for 6 and only a special from Andre Russell could have saved them from their second defeat of the summer.

Andre Russell had helped KKR bounce back against Royal Challengers Bangalore in a high-scoring thriller but this was a stiff task in Chennai. However, he stepped up again and stayed not out on 50 off 44 balls including 3 sixes. He now has 25 sixes in 6 matches in the IPL and has easily been the most valuable player for Kolkata in this edition.
